A great interview with Francis Ford Coppola
A great interview with F. F. Coppola
An essential element of any art is risk. If you don’t take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful, that hasn’t been seen before? I always like to say that cinema without risk is like having no sex and expecting to have a baby. You have to take a risk.
Where does Chopin belong?
The composer of the famous funeral march influenced many artists, writers, musicians even with his funeral. The Funeral March is being played in many funerals all around the world such as John F. Kennedy’s funeral and ironically Stalin’s. With his music, Chopin is in our lives for more than 150 years, and he’ll be here after we are gone. So can we say that he belongs to the romantic period? Just like many other classical composers’ work, his music is with us not only through concerts but also through funerals, telephone melodies, school bells. They are even in newborns’ rooms through little toys in order to sooth them into sleep. So, where does Chopin belong? Maybe he can answer this question his own;
“I do not climb so high. A long time ago I decided that my universe will be the soul and the heart of man. It is there that I look for nuances of every feeling which I transfer to music as well as I can.”
Great pianist Arthur Rubinstein once said “ Even in this abstract atomic age, where emotion is not fashionable, Chopin endures. His music is the universal language of human communication. When I play Chopin I know I speak directly to the hearts of people!”
Chopin’s legacy was his work, his music, his sigh. His musical innovations are being carried century by century. Some other geniuses left their thoughts, creations, or products that they designed. Sometimes just the life story of a genius is an inspiration for the future generations. Yet it is so hard to define what genius is. Is it genetic? Is it a defect? How much role environment has in a genius’ life? How does talent grow into genius?
All these questions twirl in our minds. The really important question is, why are we asking these questions? Are we doing it because we’re curious about how to get there, or how can our children become the geniuses of their times? Or are we looking for a release that may come from a definition, a solution, a label?
Where does this urge of defining everything come from anyway?
“Information” as being the flower of our century also became the disease of the century since in many cases, it doesn’t reflect itself as “knowledge”. Rather than that, information becomes a label. We want to know, we want categorize, we want to label everything as we grow up. We seek categories to make life easier, less complicated, less mysterious and less of a genius’ work. Why can’t our children live their lives, exploring, innovating, failing, suffering, traveling, and creating?
The geniuses in our history and our present are here to give us inspiration. Chopin was no hero and his life was no fairy tale, but now, 150 years after his death, just a piano is enough for him to reach our hearts. He doesn’t belong to the clichés defining the romantic period, or even classical music. He belongs to our hearts and minds as we open them to feel and to be inspired.

Improvisation for Breakthrough Business Results Workshop — next week!
A message from Martha Gelnaw Consulting about our next workshop . Join us on July 25th at Primary Stages, NYC.
Here are just some of the things people are saying – about the introductory Improvisation for Breakthrough Business Results session.
They feel:
More present, courageous, authentic, self-aware, ready, appreciative, considerate, tolerant, trusting, calmer, can have more harmonious interactions – and less anxious.
Please join me for an introductory session on July 25. Here are the details:
Improvisation for Breakthrough Business Results
“Prepare to be Unprepared”is what Amy Poehler (SNL, Second City, Parks and Recreation) said she learned to do as improviser. We will explore how to stay in the moment and think on your feet while using the activities of improvisation. This is not “improv” sketch comedy. You do not have to be funny. Just show up and participate.
In your business tool kit you have experience, strategy, a solid education, and well-laid plans. Yet, sooner or later, you begin to realize that the act of management becomes a delicate balance that requires advanced improvisational skills. This is where your experience and training may fall short.
With this work you can:
- Think on your feet in fast paced or uncomfortable situations
- Deal with uncertainty
- Go deeper into relationships with clients, investors, colleagues, teams
- Take risks more readily
- Feel more confident in everyday or high pressure interactions
- Find your authentic presence
Learn how in this 3-hour session.
In this introductory session, you will do what improvisers do to prepare, perform, and succeed when the stakes are high. We’ll take you through improvisation exercises and activities that help you tap in to your intuition and inner knowing.
Improvisation techniques get you thinking on your feet. This is a novel experience with new ways to have you be more successful in your business. The work is fast-paced and hey, it’s not around a conference table!
This session and its activities are specifically tailored to those who are in the room.

After our first workshop for GENIUS(by Chopin)
Our first workshop was inspiring and so much fun! We read about Chopin, talked about his life and listened to couple of his pieces selected by our director Jim Furlong and pianist Emir Gamsizoglu. Then, we dived into a deep discussion on how we define genius. What makes a talented man a genius. How does it manifest itself? How do we recognize it? Would Chopin still be a genius if he was the son of a coal miner? and many many more questions…
GENIUS(by Chopin) is about the talent/gift/potential that we all have and how our surrounding affects to manifestation of it. It is about the struggles before our potential can be released and show itself in the shape of a vision/innovation/work.
The play consists of six scenes from different times and places. Frederic Chopin with his life and music, being played live on stage, is our metaphor and the main stone that we build the play upon.
As the playwright and one of the performers of this play, I am having so much fun in the process of creating together. Join our next workshop (July 17th) to bring your questions or answers. We are looking forward to meet possible off stage and on stage company members. Check out www.geniusbychopin.wordpress.com for more info!

While writing GENIUS(by Chopin)…
What does being a genius mean?
a) Being smart
b) Being creative
c) Being unusual
d) Being crazy
e) Being talented
f) All of the above?
How many of you have at least one of these signs, characteristics in you? Or if not you, doesn’t your child come up with a crazy creative, smart, and unusual way to solve a problem every once in a while? I bet he/she does that very often.
Now another question;
How many people really inspire you with their choices, visions, life styles or creations? Not the people you read about, I’m talking about the people you live with, you see almost every day; your neighbors, classmates, colleagues, family members… If almost all of us have the gift of creativity, smartness, talent, and even craziness in us, why the world isn’t a better place? Why don’t we have more geniuses around us?
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Pablo Picasso
So, we can say that it is not only the pure talent that would make us a genius. Because as our friend Pablo puts out nicely, every child is an artist. Every child has the potential to be the genius of his/her time. The problem is how to remain one as we grow up. Because it is the endurance, hard work, resistance, and openness that let the talent grow into brilliance.
